“Mental health is the defining higher education challenge of our time,” says Michael London, Uwill founder and CEO. This thought led London to create Uwill, the leading mental health and wellness solution for colleges and students. Uwill is one of the fastest-growing edtech companies, now supporting more than 2 million lives in all 50 states and 40 countries. Utilizing its proprietary technology and counselor team, Uwill pioneered the first student and therapist matching platform. A complement to existing campus mental health offerings, the solution offers an immediate appointment with a licensed counselor based on student preferences, all modalities of teletherapy, a direct crisis connection, wellness events, realtime data, and support.
Uwill supports students primarily through Umatch, the first higher education therapist-matching platform and wellness environment. Umatch offers the fastest route to teletherapy and guaranteed availability, and offers all students an immediate appointment with a licensed counselor based on student preferences. Moreover, the Uwill platform is built to provide equitable and accessible mental health support for all students without barriers. A recent survey of students registered on Uwill’s platform revealed that 61 percent had not previously had an appointment with a therapist or mental health counselor at their institution. A complement to therapy, Uwill launched Urise, on-demand wellness programming which includes yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and more. Furthermore, Uwill worked to address shortfalls in existing crisis hotlines by launching Uhelp, the fastest and safest route for students in crisis. Direct crisis connection is recognized as the only solution to connect students directly with a licensed counselor trained in trauma.
Uwill partners with colleges to provide students with free mental health and wellness support without the hassle of waitlists, referral processes, or the complexities of insurance. Uwil’s driving mission is to remove these obstacles and provide as many people as possible with access to free mental health support offered by a diverse community of licensed counselors. Mental health professionals note that the lack of access to sufficient mental health care due to stigma, finances, availability, or location is especially harmful to students in underrepresented populations. A recent survey of mostly counseling staff at participating institutions found that 79 percent agreed the partnership with Uwill has enabled them to provide or enhance mental health support to students after hours. Lastly, Ucollaborate, Uwill’s dashboard, provides full transparency with realtime data, analytics, tailored reporting, and coordination of care.
Uwill has achieved significant growth and success since its inception A recent marquee achievement is Uwill’s first-in-the-nation partnership with the state of New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy, and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE) to provide comprehensive mental health and wellness support to students at 45 public and private institutions, with 500,000 students. In January of this year, Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Brian Bridges announced the renewal of this partnership through at least spring 2025.
As a result of this rapid and sustained growth, and despite challenging times for other technology ventures, in April 2023, Uwill completed its $30M Series A funding from Education Growth Partners, a CT-based private equity firm dedicated to providing growth capital in the education, workplace, and learning sectors. The investment will be used to allow Uwill to continue to partner with more schools and invest in its counselor community. Moreover, Uwill recently acquired Christie Campus Health, which offered mental health and wellness support to over 750,000 students from more than 100 colleges. This acquisition further cements Uwill’s status as the nation’s fastest- growing on-campus mental health provider.
The Uwill team is honored to be included as a finalist for the 2024 Global Business Tech Awards Edtech Company of the Year. Being a finalist is acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of our team in support of our mission, to expand access to mental health care for colleges and students.
